Admittedly I’m a music fan first. I’m one of those people who flicks through their iPod before preparing coffee in the morning, for me its important to have a soundtrack to the day, scene and place. In reality a DJs purpose is more than just playing records, its about ‘creating atmosphere’. To do so, you have to know your audience as well as your music. The state of technology today means that we have access to vast archives of everything from classical music to punk rock, its a wonderful thing but doesn’t always help us find good music. In response I’ve put together the ‘Spinlist’, a channel for you to discover the influences and inspiration to my daily routine, and possibly even DJ sets.
The first release is a podcast by one of my favorite artists, Mayer Hawthorne – happy listening!
Mayer Hawthorne Radio, Episode 3 (Stones Throw Podcast 65) by spinlist
Recently I’ve been playing a lot of a SOUL, FUNK and DISCO. Mainly stuff from the late 70′s and 80′s: Bobby Caldwell, Sylvia Striplin, The Originals and then some Mayer Hawthorne from his recent album “How Do You Do” which fits in nicely. As a result I’ve got a funky set ready for all you people who wanna dance. So come join me on the 12th of November, who knows, you might even hear some Rick James?!
Good afternoon all,
Come join the Damnation Halloween Party at London West Bank in Notting Hill next Saturday 29th Oct. Fancy dress is essential, the space which is a huge converted bank will be themed for Halloween with custom artwork, pumpkins and special lighting. There’ll be a live bands upstairs including The Rotten Hill Gang and DJ sets by myself, Don Letts, Chris Sullivan and James Prentice on the ground floor.
It starts at 7pm and goes on until 4am, with limited tickets on the door I recommend booking yours directly: http://damnationatwestbank.eventbrite.com
I’ll be opening the night with a DJ set from 7pm so be sure to come early!
People often ask, “What do you play?” To give you a bit of background, I’m a Hip-Hop and Soul kind of guy who started off by mixing Garage and Four To The Floor in the late 90′s. What I liked was the mash up culture, guys like Todd Edwards, MJ Cole and Wookie defined that era for me – they did so through their remixes. Now I listen to everything, I love Rock & Dark Jazz from the 60′s and 70′s, Motown Soul, 80′s Funk and Disco plus new stuff which can no longer be defined by a gendre. A good friend, DJ Riott introduced me to Nu-Disco a while back, since I’ve seen Moombahton, Future Garage among other genders develop. I appreciate and play it all. A current artist who does a great job of combining many styles of music is Alex Clare, you’ll hear some dubstep, rock, soul and even dancehall influences in his album “Lateness Of The Hour” – go check it out or just listen 20 minutes into Deucy Do! Well, enjoy my latest set, its a combination of what I’ve been playing over the last month or so.

Someone smart once said, “life imitates art” and if you hang in there, you’ll hear a tribute to that. What you’re about to listen to is a 70 minute live set of music inspired by art. The gendre can only defined as eclectic, you’ll hear some Nu-Disco, Hip-Hop, Soul, Reggae, Electronica, House and Mash-Up. Some of the tracks, I love, yet hadn’t played before – for example, the mashed up sound of Leggy Salad – Go Back Over Fragmentary. The track brings me back to the days when I started DJing, rewind to 1998: I was a 15 year old kid whose pocket money would go towards the latest vinyl; to me Leggy’s sound is reminiscent of the legendary house and garage producer Todd Edwards. I’ll let you discover the rest of the music which owes itself to a fun crowd, and gallery surrounded by the very talented Alec Monopoly’s art.

With great excitement I’d like to reveal my forthcoming performance at none other than Alec Monopoly’s UK launch party. This legendary American street artist is recognised for his depiction of the beloved Monopoly board game mascot ‘Rich Uncle Penny Bags’ across billboards, street walls and other streetscapes in major cities including New York, Los Angeles and now London. While at first glance his work may fall into the ‘pop-art’ category, it contains a certain depth which represents the apocalyptic nature of corporations in modern day society. By using bold colours and expressive brush strokes he has brought new life to iconic characters such as Bob Dylan and Jack Nicholson and made their flamboyant personalities come alive. ‘Alec’ was inspired by Andy Warhol whose affinity for the Campbell’s Soup Can allowed him to express his views on modern society, using variations in the image as perceived metaphors of life.
Over the next 10 days you can expect a buzz around the streets of London in the lead up to Alec’s first solo exhibition overseas. Keep your eyes peeled for large painted works of the Monopoly Man and Jack Nicholson on the streets of West London and the City, particularly areas such as Notting Hill, Westbourne Grove and Liverpool Street. At the opening and party next Thursday 9th of June his works will go on sale for the first time in the UK, you can also expect an appearance by the legend himself, live painting in the garden, a team of mixologists serving cocktails and yours truly, DJ Deux Spin providing the soundtrack to this guaranteed sell-out evening!
This event is invitation only, please RSVP to: art@graffikgallery.co.uk.
Friends and Listeners,
I recently recorded a blend of Hip-Hop, Soul and Disco edits – music with a carefree, summer spirit. My philosophy when it comes to DJing is that one shouldn’t be limited by a style or gendre of music. I happen to like music with melody, hence I once told a good friend of mine “anything goes with a touch of soul”. In reality soul can mean many things, which is what I really intended. Hopefully this 60 minute set will give you a glimpse of who I am as a music fan and DJ, consider it an introduction of what’s to come.
Yours,
Deux Spin

- Listening to David Mancuso's The Loft. They say "for those who know", I say there's a magic in his music that's waiting to be discovered.
- Constantly inspired by DJs David Mancuso & Larry Levan. The music scene they created in the 70's soon became clubbing as we know it today.
- Just recorded an hour set of soul from vinyl. The 70/80's classics plus some Lee Fields, Mayer Hawthorne, Tony Cook.
http://t.co/OkDISiKn - Listening to Sine & Moon by Jonti of @stonesthrow. Beautiful sounds!
- Invest in good headphones with a wide frequency response. Wear earplugs if you go clubbing. Take the test here:
